What to Expect

Using the McTimoney method, your chiropractor will gently manipulate your body structure. Often treatment is hardly felt, but the pressure it relieves in the body is the most important response, helping your body to go back to looking after itself.

Your first appointment

It is advisable to wear loose-fitting clothing to your appointment.

Your first appointment will take 1.5 hours. During this time, your chiropractor will:

  • Ask you questions about your condition and other aspects of health status including any recent medical procedures
  • Offer you a short explanation about what you can expect from your treatment
  • Conduct an assessment of the range of motion and flexibility around the area of complaint
  • Conduct an assessment of any musculoskeletal structural imbalances
  • Conduct an assessment assessment of muscle strength and joint mobility

As a result of your initial assessment, your chiropractor is likely to recommend a short course of conservative treatment. This may include manual therapy and some suggested exercises.

We require the patients’ consent to go ahead with the recommended course of treatment and answer any questions that the patient may have about their treatment.

In rare cases chiropractic treatment may not be advised and the patient may be referred to another healthcare practitioner.

During treatment

During your treatment your chiropractor makes very gentle and precise adjustments to the spine and pelvic structures, as well as any other affected areas. Even though these adjustment can feel quite subtle, the overall effect of the treatment may be felt after the treatment has finished.

You may also be given advice to support your condition, including exercises, lifestyle and postural advice to help you with your condition.

After treatment

After the condition it is recommended that you don’t do any strenuous exercises, or heavy lifting. It is also recommended that you drink plenty of water.

Patients often experience that treatment can take up to two days to have an effect.

Chiropractic treatment during pregnancy can be helpful as part of ongoing ‘maintenance’ as well as in those situations where the pregnant mother experiences an acute episode of lower back pain.

Many pregnant mothers also visit chiropractors for common conditions during pregnancy such as pelvic girdle pain (pubic symphysis disorder) and rib pain.
